    Gentilly
Lake Oaks subdivision, near the lakefront on the north side of Gentilly, was developed in the 1960's. This was around the time the University of New Orleans was being established on the west side of Elysian Fields. This area provides lovely brick homes on generous lots with a preponderance of oak trees throughout the area.

The north side of New Orleans borders Lake Pontchartrain which is 24 miles across with a Causeway bridge for crossing the Lake. Lake Pontchartrain provides public access for recreational activities such as sailing and fishing, as well as a parkway (Lakeshore Drive) to drive along. There are also walking paths that are great to stroll along to view the scenery and enjoy the lake breezes.

The University of New Orleans, originally established in 1958 as a commuter college branch of L.S.U., carried the name L.S.U.N.O. for many years until it later broke away from the state university system to become "U.N.O." Built on land that had once been a U.S. Naval air base, the university had plenty of land on which to build its modern buildings, along with plenty of parking - a commodity that is sorely lacking on some other university campuses in New Orleans. In addition to its renowned jazz studies program, U.N.O. has outstanding math, science, and technology programs. Benjamin Franklin High School, a public school for gifted students is now located on the U.N.O. campus as well, in its own building built a few years ago. Located in Gentilly at the north end of Elysian Fields near the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, the U.N.O. campus enjoys lake breezes, along with easy access to nearby seafood restaurants and recreational opportunities on Lake Pontchartrain.
