    Lower Garden District
One of the most beautiful antebellum houses in New Orleans, this house was built in 1956 for Henry Buckner, who made his fortune in cotton. This magnificent Garden District mansion boasts galleries on three sides, 48 Ionic and Corinthian fluted columns made of cypress, three ballrooms, and a cast iron fence with an unusual and intricate honeysuckle design.

The house was sold in 1923 and converted into the prestigious Soule Business School, where countless New Orleanians received accounting and other business degrees, including, my father-in-law, until it closed down in 1983. It is now a private residence. As is the case with many antebellum houses, the Henry Buckner Mansion is believed to have a resident ghost.

During the Civil War, Union soldiers under the command of General Benjamin Butler, confiscated several homes in this area to house men and supplies. One of these, the Griffin House, an 1852 historic antebellum Greek Revival masonry private home, is said to be "occupied" by soldier ghosts. It is supposedly among the top 10 most haunted houses in New Orleans!

Centered around Coliseum Square, the Lower Garden District neighborhood includes the nine Muses-named streets. Given the fact that one of the city's Mardi Gras krewes is named Muses, and of which I am a proud member, I have a definite affinity for the area! In 1810 when the city planner, Barthelemy Lafon, was asked to draw up plans for this area, Ancient Greek style was all the rage. Lafon was inspired to name some of the streets after the nine daughters of Zeus, who are the goddesses of inspiraton in Greek mythology. Often mispronounced, locals delight in challenging others for the correct pronunciation of Polymnia, Melpomene, Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Thalia and Urania!

If you're like me and could eat Vietnamese food every day, this is the place to go. Lilly's is conveniently located on Magazine Street, with plenty of parking around the corner on Felicity Street. The owners and servers work tirelessly, and offer incredibly friendly, fast service. And they always recognize their regular customers.

My favorite dishes here are the pork banh mi and the spicy Saigon roll, but I've never been disappointed with any of their dishes. The ingredients are always fresh, and most - if not all - of everything they serve is homemade. And, of course, you always have to finish off your meal with a Vietnamese iced coffee.

Restaurants like Commander's Palace are the kinds of places that make New Orleans world-renowned for its cuisine. It was established in 1880 and counts among its Executive Chefs such culinary heavyweights as Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse. Speaking from personal experience, the food and service here were, without exaggeration, the best I've ever had in my life.

The park is very relaxing. It is also a great place to meet the neighbors walking their dogs. The association is actually voluntary and they have meetings every third Monday. What a great park in the lower Garden District. Keep it a secret!
