    History and Overview
    The Tulane/Gravier neighborhood is a sub-district of Mid-City. Named for the founder of Tulane University, Paul Tulane, and brothers Jean & Bertrand Gravier, who laid out Faubourg St. Marie.

    This area was first claimed by the Jesuits, until the King of France expelled them from Louisiana in 1763, and auctioned off their land. In 1806, some of the land was given to the Marquis de Lafayette, to reward him for his efforts during the Revolutionary War. The area saw industrial development following the construction of the Carondelet Canal in 1794 and the New Basin Canal in 1832. Residential development did not happen until the 1880's and 1890's, when many of the shotgun-style homes and camelbacks that are so prevalent, were built.

    The Lafitte Greenway, which is a 2.6 mile linear park with multi-use trails, runs along the eastern side of this area. It follows the route of the historic Carondelet Canal. It connects the Bayou St. John area in Mid-City, to the French Quarter and Downtown.

    In the last few years, this area has gotten a huge economic boost with the development of the Bio-Medical Corridor along Galvez, Canal and Tulane Avenue, 1500 acres spanning from Downtown to Mid-City. This is an innovative, medical community providing healthcare, medical research, clinical trials and eduction, including, the LSU Health & Science Center, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Louisiana Cancer Research Center, University Medical Center, and the Bio-Innovation Center.
