Also known as the "Arts District," the Warehouse District, with its historic brick buildings, row houses, and townhouses, is adjacent to the Central Business District. In the 19th century, this area was industrial, with many manufacturing plants and warehouses that were used to store much of the produce that shipped from the Port of New Orleans, including, coffee, grain and cotton.

During the 1950's, '60s and '70s, the area went through terrible decline and was commonly referred to as "skid row". One of the catalysts that turned this around was the 1984 Louisiana World Expo which occupied the area right along the Mississippi River, in the Warehouse District. Old wharves were torn down to make way for what would eventually become the Riverwalk Outlet Mall and the Convention Center. Empty warehouses and factories which were converted into expo space, are now home to many of the fine restaurants, bars and condos in this area.

Another event that contributed to the transformation of the Warehouse District was the opening of the CAC (Contemporary Arts Center). The art community recognized the potential of all the warehouse space for galleries. Today, there are over 25 art galleries and world-class museums.

The Warehouse District is a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, with restaurants, professional offices, retail shops and residents occupying the restored historic industrial buildings.

This is such a fantastic restaurant. Their menu is creative yet accessible, and the service is always fantastic. The list of menu items that Capdeville is known for seems to keep getting longer. The list of "must-haves" so far includes the Capdeville burger, fried red beans and rice (yes, you read that correctly), poutine, truffle parmesan fries, and truffled mac and cheese. After having their espresso crème brûlée very recently, I'm adding that to the "must-have" list. If you're in the neighborhood, make sure you stop in at Capdeville. You won't be disappointed.

Stirling is also available by commission. I recently commissioned him to do a piece of work of my home. Couldn't be happier with the outcome!
