Two weekends a year a music phenomenon occurs in an otherwise sleepy and folksy area of New Orleans. That would be the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the Broad Neighborhood. The venue is, of course, the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots (not sure why the name includes a reference to slot machines, but so be it). The Broad Neighborhood, roughly bound by Esplanade, Bayou St. John, Florida Avenue and N. Broad, is an area replete with classic creole and artisan's cottages and encircles the race track with its daily neighborhood gathers and front porch conversations.

One of my favorite restaurants, Cafe Degas, sits proudly on Esplanade and is the Broad neighborhood doorway to some of the city's best grocery stores, coffee shops, bars and eateries. But buckle your seat belt on the last weekend of April as Jazz Fest will transform Broad into a carnival of music, wares, parking spots, and music, the likes of which the rest of the country rarely sees.

The New Marigny is located on the North side of St. Claude Ave across from the very well established Bywater and Faubourg Marigny neighborhoods. It is the new eclectic area that is quickly being transformed into "The Place" to live in New Orleans. Watch for a transformation in the next 12 months.

The French Quarter neighborhood of New Orleans is a mix of fine dining and cheap eats on the go. There are many hotels, beignets, and shopping at Canal Place Mall. Watch and listen to the street musicians, buy art from the street artists, take a ride on a Pedi Cab, or tour on a horse and carriage. The French Quarter is bursting with history, restaurants and amazing sites and if you have never been, you come on down and check it out.
