Before you get too full of barbecue, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the true significance of Memorial Day. It is a day where we pay tribute to the brave men and women who paid/pay the ultimate sacrifice so you and I can live in the greatest country in the world. The contributions are what it is all about. All gave some, and some gave all.

Although on hold for right now until all flooding damage has been repaired, the Shreveport Dog Park is set to open hopefully by the fall of 2016. It will be located near the Stoner Boat Launch. Having been highly anticipated and rallied for for the last five years by scores of local citizens, it seems that this canine project will soon be underway!

If you're a fan, please support us with welcoming Rickey Smiley to our Shreveport Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, December 5th. Rickey Smiley is an American stand-up comedian, television host, actor, and so, so funny radio personality best known for his prank phone calls. The calls feature Smiley disguising his many amazing voices and carrying on a conversation with the recipient of the call. It's gut-busting laughter. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, $30-$55.

If you're a fan like me, you'll be excited to know that American blues rock musician, singer and songwriter, Joe Bonamassa will be performing at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium on Tuesday, December 1. Amazingly, Bonamassa opened for the late great B.B. King when he was only 12 years old. In the last 13 years Bonamassa has had 15 solo albums to his name through his independent record label, J&R Adventures. True fans won't be deterred by the really early jump start to the weekend or the $65-$100 admission fees as it promises to be a great show.

    32ND Annual Christmas in Roseland

I know! Thanksgiving is not here yet and here we are talking about Christmas. It's hard to resist when so many stores are already inundated with Christmas Cheer which got me to thinking about our annual trip to Christmas in Roseland.

Christmas in Roseland is a most spectacular depiction of winter wonderland, with more than one million twinkling, bright lights adorned throughout the nation's largest park dedicated to roses. Visitors will definitely love the eight-foot singing Christmas tree and beautiful, life-size Christmas cards. Kids get to take photos with Santa, enjoy magical train rides, and experience an amazing "snow blizzard." Nightly performers always keep the crowds entertained. Delectable concessions are available. Group-tours are friendly. The park is open Fridays only from Nov. 27-Dec. 20 with special Encore Nights on Dec. 21, 22 and 23. Admission is $5 per person or $20 per carload.

The Rose Center is located at 8877 Jefferson Paige Road. For more information, call 318-938-5402.

    Have fun and be safe.

The State Fair of Louisiana, normally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, will be open Tuesday, Nov. 3, beginning at 10 a.m.

That's the update from marketing director Russell Adams. "We will be open Tuesday to make up for the adverse weather we've been having the past two weeks."

The Fair reopened Wednesday of last week after having been shut down or open on a limited basis for four days because of our area's, much needed, rain.

On Oct. 24, inclement weather forced the State Fair to cancel the evening concert that would have featured Frank Foster and Lainey Wilson. Carnival rides and scheduled attractions were also not operating. But, Fair goers were still able to enjoy the Pro Rodeo which went on as scheduled in Hirsch Memorial Coliseum. None the less, the State Fair was open that day with very limited exhibits and food vendors.

On Oct. 24 and 25, officials decided to close the State Fair because of continued weather concerns. The State Fair was closed Monday and Tuesday as originally scheduled. We are still waiting on the word regarding extending the Fair another week to allow locals/welcomed visitors to take the full benefits of one of our major fall attractions.

Donated this morning and, for years, have done so just to give life to those in need when I actually don't need all I have because it readily replenishes its self. Every 56 days is the regular donation period. According to statistics, someone will need blood every two seconds and just one donation can save up to three lives. With all the incredible advances in modern medicine, there is still no manufactured substitute for human blood. It must be provided by volunteer blood donors, like us, in the community. One in three people will need blood in their lifetime. If you don't need blood, it's almost certain that someone you know will. As a community blood center, Lifeshare provides the blood components to hospitals and medical facilities in the community. After you donate with them, you will be able to review your blood type, cholesterol, blood pressure and other health information on their Donor Portal. - See more at: http://www.lifeshare.org/faqs#sthash.eq9yOKJo.dpuf

For some really grown up Halloween fun, try finding your way through Louisiana's original corn maze. You can also pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, which are free with admission (while supplies last). You can also visit some really haunted attractions and more.

The pumpkin patch closes at dark and the haunted attractions start after dark. Some attractions have height and weight restrictions and require a waiver of liability to participate. No more admissions are allowed one hour before the posted closing time. No alcohol, tobacco, food or drinks are permitted at Dixie Maze Farms. All sales are final with no refunds or rain checks.

Tonight there can be substantial lines to the haunted attractions especially 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 pm. You would be best served by buying your ticket online and arriving before or after those hours may help to avoid waiting in line. Check the website at info.dixiemaze.com. The address is 9596 Sentell Road, Shreveport, LA.

Have fun, and please be safe.

Our State Fair of Louisiana is one of the largest attractions for over a century. Shreveport/Bossier City's main fall attraction offers a wealth of entertainment. Apart from the usual exciting events of the State Fairs throughout our USA, our Louisiana fair offers free, top-lining entertainment ranging from leading music artists, stunt and acrobatic shows to spectacular tiger encounter shows, racing pigs and the Great American Duck Race, ferocious circus, carnival, and the Kiddie Korral midway for young children and adults alike.

Weather predictions indicate that Tuesday through Friday of this week just might be the best days to escape the most rain as it expected to pick up again on Saturday with a 60% chance and Saturday with a 70% chance. Really want you to enjoy this wonderful event in a city we enjoy calling home and want you to always be safe as well.

I remain a strong supporter of this major fall attraction of our Shreveport/Bossier City Community.
I've blogged about it for the last few days as it just opened on Thursday. I've just learned that, because of the predicted 100% of rain on tomorrow, Sunday, October 24, the Fair will be closed. Keep in mind too, that until it leaves on November 11, it's normal days of closure are Mondays and Tuesdays.

Please plan to attend. Just want you to be safe.

The State Fair of Louisiana is in town again and if you've ever been to the Fair, you know the exciting thriller rides and super eye-popping attractions aren't the only things that make it such an electrifying Shreveport-Bossier City fall tradition. It's the traditional and ever-changing quirky food like Bacon-Covered Caramel Apples, Donut Burgers and Deep Fried Watermelon.

The Fair opens this morning, Thursday, October 22, at 10 a.m. and is here through November 11. It will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and ticket prices are $10-$75.

If you're planning to go this weekend, it may be a good idea to pack an umbrella as there's a 20% chance of rain today, the same for tomorrow, 90% on Saturday and a whopping 100% on Sunday.

    Have fun and be safe.
