The annual Fete Du Vermillion will take place on August 15, 2018. This event celebrates the Catholic holy day of the Feast of the Assumption. A procession of boats will ascend along the Vermillion River after an 8:00 a.m. Mass of the Feast of the Assumption will be recited in French at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Abbeville and then continue on to several other sites along the Vermillion River. The procession will arrive at Beaver Park in Lafayette and then start a foot walk to St. Johns Cathedral in Downtown Lafayette where the procession ends with a mass celebrating this Holy day. This event which began in 2015 by a local priest has become very popular and a day of celebration for many Cajun Catholics in the area.

Downtown Lafayette is quickly becoming one of the hippest places to live in the area. Old warehouses are becoming artists lofts, homes from the 30's and 40's are being restored to their former glory with modern amenities, and old store fronts are coming back to life. There are numerous restaurants, shops and a lively nightlife, all within walking distance or a quick bike ride.
